The nature of the work at Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) means that its staff travel nationally on a regular basis. In order to set an example by operating in an environmentally and socially responsible way, HEFCE set a key objective to minimise carbon emissions from business travel and one way of achieving this was through phone and videoconferencing. For example, in 2007-8 business and commuting travel by HEFCE staff resulted in a 6% reduction from 2002-3. Moreover, it helped HEFCE’s staff to improve work-life balance by avoiding overnight stays and long journeys.
