Mat Jane, Head of Energy and Environment, The University of Winchester emailed the Members’ network asking,
“Our new insurer UMAL is requesting that all bin stores should be located more than 10 meters from our buildings (which is almost impossible on our site), where they are not located more than 10 meters from a building they should be in covered bin stores constructed of fire resistant materials.
We think we have found an option for the bin store but they are also suggesting that all bins should stay locked and the store should also be lockable to prevent casual arsonists/careless smokers from setting fire to the bins. My fear is that all this will make it far too difficult for students to put their rubbish in the bins. I expect the waste will just be dumped outside the bin store causing the unsafe condition they are trying to prevent.
Have any other waste managers come across these issues with this particular insurer and if so how have you dealt with it?”
