The Works is an employment and skills centre established by the University of Manchester in 2011 with the objective of raising skill levels and improving employment opportunities for local unemployed people. The Works offers a range of services including advice and guidance, free access to IT facilities, pre-employment training and literacy and numeracy courses. It is the only employer led facility of its kind in the NW.
Since March 2011 it has supported 1600 unemployed people into work and provided employability training to 2500. In addition to its obvious social impact The Works has produced £23 million in savings to the local economy. In our employment, 92% of Grades 1/2 staff are now from Greater Manchester, significantly increasing the number of local people employed. It has transformed lives, enhanced our community engagement profile and is highly valued by communities and councillors.
