Dawn White, Environmental Officer, City University London emailed the EAUC Educational Members' Network asking foradvice about the merits of switching off versus leaving PCs in stand-by mode:
“Can anyone suggest where I might find stats on how much power is actually saved by switching off PCs completely – compared to using hibernate or stand-by mode? Most of what I‟m finding indicates that hibernation is nearly as good as switching off.
Many staff here prefer to use hibernate mode as it allows them to boot up faster in the mornings, and our IT team normally suggests that to staff as well. If I could give people some hard numbers to help explain why they should be switching off, that might help persuade them. Any suggestions?”
