Steps to a successful recycling scheme
- Know your waste types, quantities and locations – see The Current Position.
- Identify the local market for recyclables; it is more difficult to achieve success with recycling if there is not an apparent readily accessible market for the purchase of recyclables nearby.
- Plan your recycling efforts incorporating education and awareness initiatives
- Locate the recycling facilities close to where people generate the recyclables eg café, photocopying office, common rooms etc.
- Get the cleaners and porters involved and on board.
- Initially concentrate on “quick wins” to encourage greater participation
- Start small – don’t try to recycle all of your waste at first, concentrate your efforts on two or three materials e.g. cans, glass and paper that are proportionately important, easy to recycle and more likely to be financially sustainable.
- Good publicity is essential for the success of the scheme.
- Remember that contamination of collections is frequently cited as a reason for failure of recycling schemes. Proper segregation and storage of materials is essential.
- Measure what you recycle and monitor your activities.
- Ensure that there is one point of contact for internal use and external contractors.
- Report your successes and provide feedback to staff and students.
