Residential Waste

Depending on your local authority, waste from residences may have a different charge than your commercial waste. Some local authorities have not charged extra for the uplift of waste from halls of residences in the past. How long this situation prevails depends on your local circumstances.

The types of waste generated are similar to general household waste and therefore there should be opportunities for recycling a considerable portion of the waste stream such as paper, cardboard, glass bottles, cans, batteries.

The best way to organise recycling is to ensure it is part of your tender specification – potential waste contractors can provide useful advice about the options for recycling, but don’t be put off if they are not imaginative with their ideas.
Individual projects for recycling certain waste streams can be set up after contracts have been let. As with all recycling schemes, they require close monitoring and management support (not just the transient student community) to maximise their success.
The University of Derby has successfully recycled over 50 tonnes of residential waste so saving several thousand pounds.
