The Sustainability Team at the University of Reading works with local bus company Reading Buses to provide an excellent service for staff, students and visitors. Responsiveness by the bus company to improve services based on working in partnership with the University and feedback of staff and student needs has resulted in a yearly increase in passenger numbers of 15-20% each year for the last 5 years.
Ten years ago, there were two buses a week onto campus: as of September 2014 there is now a bus to the town centre onto campus every 5 minutes during the day in term time; an all-night bus service just launched; and a range of discounted tickets available to staff and students. The route extends into the local community who also benefit from the much improved service. This is all provided at no financial cost to the University. The buses are hybrid vehicles, so further minimising carbon impacts of University travel.
