Planting Hedges

Consider the following points to maximise the biodiversity value of your new hedge.

Use your imagination in selecting species. Almost any tree or shrub can be used within a campus setting. Include those with winter berries, attractive flowers and/or colourful autumn leaves.

Create dense cover:

Use a variety of shrubs;
Plant two or three staggered rows of two-year old plants at a rate of about five per metre;
Plant at a 45-degree angle to create a thick base; and
Plant woodland-edge flowers along the bottom of the hedge.

Include hedge trees. Plant taller hedge trees at intervals of about 10 metres.
