Pesticides and Herbicides

Many FHE institutions will use pesticides and herbicides, most commonly within their grounds section.

A range of strategies to reduce their use include:

Using more natural habitats or indigenous species to reduce maintenance and increase biodiversity, thus encouraging natural predators.
Use of traps and hardware to capture or discourage pests.

If it is necessary to use pesticides:

Waste can be minimised by storing these materials carefully. They often have long shelf lives and can be used over extended periods thus reducing wastage.
Remember that container washings must also be considered as waste. Careful planning of your activities may allow you to use container washings as part of your overall pesticide use strategy.
Under no circumstances must pesticide waste be disposed to drain. Pesticide waste is Special/Hazardous Waste and must therefore be appropriately consigned.
