Queen Mary University of London 2014/15 Sustainability Report Published

22nd October 2015

The third annual QMUL Sustainability Report has been published.

It provides an overview of sustainability across QMUL and describes how it is inextricably linked to the university’s values, heritage and fundamental purpose. This purpose is to serve the public good, aiming to transform wider society and the lives of students and staff through the achievement of the highest international standards in education and research.

The report highlights the positive economic, social and environmental impacts QMUL has made over the last 12 months. Examples include the positive economic impacts of the research carried out, how the university continues to be an important part of the local community and the ways it promotes opportunity to talented individuals regardless of background.

Writing in the report, Simon Gaskell, President and Principal, comments: “We view sustainability as an opportunity, rather than an inconvenience, making an important contribution towards the choices we make and how we operate as a world-leading academic institution and community over the long term.”

He adds: “Embedding environmental sustainability principles in our operations is essential to ensure an outstanding student experience and an appropriate environment for our teaching and research activities. That is why our new five-year strategy explicitly states that we will grow our activities alongside a firm commitment to our environmental responsibilities.”

For the first time QMUL has sought to align the Sustainability Report to key elements of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Framework for sustainability and social reporting. Central to this is the introduction of stakeholder identification and engagement to highlight the university’s material sustainability aspects and then prioritise them. This work will continue in future years to help demonstrate QMUL's commitment to sustainability and triple bottom line reporting.
