It was William Wordsworth who wrote some 200 years ago that ‘’we are out of tune’’ with nature, and roughly 50 years ago that Bob Dylan, a further romantic brother in arms continued along a similar discourse with his song ‘’A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall’’ which is the inspiration behind The Hard Rain Projects new book, Whole Earth.
Whole Earth written by Mark Edwards and Lloyd Timberlake, is the antidote to Hard Rain and a perfect stocking filler, looks to explain and discuss contemporary solutions to the triple bottom line (Environment, Economy & Society) which comprises the sustainable paradigm. Whole Earth, offers solutions in the areas of climate, energy, fresh water, oceans and agriculture, but also in areas such as human rights and economic rule-making. By aligning the complex interplays between human and nature systems, the reader becomes painfully aware of just how inextricably linked these two entities are with one another.
The book provides the reader with a roadmap to a sustainable future and explains the difficult tasks which society must overcome to achieve this goal such as: water scarcity, dwindling forests, extinctions, acid oceans, overfishing, hunger, poverty, population increase and of course climate change. A diverse range of sustainable solutions are discussed from reinventing the modern world, to fair-trade solutions and protecting and enhancing ecological diversity. Whole Earth leaves the reader with a sustainable check list, not to sign up to, but to live up to and expand on in their quest for sustainability.
Whole Earth comprises of 88 pages; full colour throughout, each double-page and illustrated with pictures by the world’s leading photographers. The spread is available to view online.
You can also watch 4-minute film about Whole Earth? featuring Jan Eliasson, Deputy Secretary-General, United Nations and buy the book from www.hardrainproject.com at the special introductory price of only £6.50 + P&P.
