Loughborough wins battle to be the greenest
Loughborough wins battle to be the greenest
14th April 2009
Loughborough Students’ Union has reclaimed a hotly-contested environmental award for the third year running.
The Sound Environmental Impact Awards is an accreditation scheme to help Students’ Unions do their bit for the environment. Now in its third year, over a million students have seen environmental initiatives put in place in their Unions through the awards. This year, seventy-nine Students’ Unions took part from across the UK.
At the Awards Night on 07 April in Liverpool, writer, comedian and broadcaster Hardeep Singh Kohli – best known for presenting The One Show on BBC1 – announced that there was just one point between the top three scoring Unions.
Amidst much tension from over 400 students and staff, Hardeep announced that ever-competitive Loughborough had just pipped Leeds University Union and Newcastle University Union Society to the post by one point. Loughborough gained 646 points compared to 645 from Leeds and Newcastle.
Anna Heywood, Project Founder and Sound Impact judge, said: “The Unions have really stepped up a significant level this year and have surpassed themselves”. Anna added “It has been so exciting to see how Unions have been doing everything they can to green all aspects of their operations and universities in a race to the top, and every point they have gained has been good news for the environment”.
The eight greenest Unions received prestigious hand-made sculptures made from recycled car window glass.
