Flytipping Small Grant Scheme

During the financial year 2010/11 local authorities reported that they dealt with an estimated 62,400 incidents of flytipping. This not only has resource implications but indicates the scale of illegal waste disposal.

Flytipping is a problem because:

• it costs millions of pounds every year to investigate and clear up. The cost falls on taxpayers and private landowners;
• it is not only aesthetically detrimental but it can pose a threat to humans and wildlife, become a fire hazard, damage to our environment; and
• flytipping activity undermines legitimate waste businesses where illegal operators undercut those operating within the law.

The flytipping small grant scheme is being administered by Keep Scotland Beautiful on behalf of Zero Waste Scotland to support landowners/managers and community groups in Scotland who have experienced persistent problems of flytipping. The total grant fund is £75,000.

The proposed objectives are:

• to facilitate the removal of flytipping at upwards of ten locations during the current financial year (2012-13); and
• to prevent reoccurring flytipping at the same locations over the next financial year.
