Step-by-step Guide for Sustainability Leaders

We released today the Making the Business Case for Sustainability - A Guide for Sustainability Leaders. This Guide is designed to help sustainability leaders to make a successful case for sustainability in a Further and Higher Education context, to embed sustainability at the top of their organisation and bring about systemic change in the way business decisions are made. 

It provides critical opportunities for value creation and risk mitigation at a time when universities and colleges are looking for ways to become more resilient in an increasingly volatile environment. 

The Guide continues the important work we have started in 2018 regarding the institutional benefits available when sustainability becomes a ‘top team, top table issue’ and one that complements and enriches current agendas.

How can this Guide help you?

• It provides a useful context by explaining how the strategic business case for sustainability was made at the University of Edinburgh as it was highlighted by Dave Gorman - Director of Social Responsibility and Sustainability in Video 1 and Paul McNaull, Former Director of Finance (2012 - 2018) in Video 2.
• Illustrates how sustainability can benefit institutions across the four pillars of success through a range of case studies   
• Outlines the purpose of a business case and the main elements it should contain 
• Describes the steps that should be considered when developing a business case
• Summarises some of the factors that will help change the attitudes of senior leaders towards sustainability over the long-term

The Guide was produced by the Department for Social Responsibility and Sustainability at the University of Edinburgh, on behalf of EAUC.
The content was developed with expert input from sector leaders who have real experience of delivering change in their organisations.
