Green Gown Award winner Manchester Metropolitan tops the 2013 Green League
11th June 2013
With the results of this year’s Green League going live today, the EAUC are delighted to see so many of its Members and Green Gown Award winners, highly commended and finalists leading the way in the top rankings.
EAUC Members dominate the 2013 Green League which shows that these institutions are proactively using their Membership to inform and support their work, as well as engaging with our vast community to inspire the sector to continually strive to achieve more collectively. We’d like to offer huge congratulations to all Members for their achievements in 2013 and we’re here for them in the future to see this success build year on year.
Topping this year’s table,
Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) jumped 9 places in 2013. It’s surprising to note that they ranked a lowly 91st in 2006, but now MMU has a powerful sustainability story to tell. As the 2012
Green Gown Award winner for Continuous Improvement, this is a powerful journey, full of passion and pride - a deserving winner. It’s a tale of carbon reduction, behavioural change and investment in environmental improvements.
Campus-wide commitments and passionate programme leaders have seen it rise to 10th in the 2012 Green League. To date, it has reduced carbon emissions by 18.5% (4,576 tonnes annually) and offset rising energy prices. Crucially, almost 94% of students regard MMU as an ‘eco-friendly university’, it is lauded across the city and beyond as a leader on sustainability and its approach to change has been embraced across the entire staff and student population.
MMU’s story demonstrates a strong commitment to improvement and the Green Gown Awards’ place in highlighting where good practice is taking place and recognising and rewarding excellence. The 2013 Awards close to stage 1 entries tomorrow at 12 noon so there’s still plenty of time to submit an entry to reward and recognise your work in 2013.
People & Planet’s Green League is the only comprehensive and independent league table of UK universities ranked by environmental and ethical performance. It is compiled annually by the UK’s largest student campaigning network, People & Planet.
