Information for detailed review
In an ideal situation, information about the volumes and weights of waste produced should already be available, as well as information on all materials used within the institution that will subsequently generate waste. This is seldom the case. Accurate data on utilisation of resources, the proportion of resource ending up as waste, and the composition and weight of waste collected by the waste contractor, is not normally available and certainly not in one place. More importantly it can be difficult, if not impossible, to identify the true costs of waste management activities.
Information required for this stage can be obtained from a variety of locations e.g. purchasing records, waste contractor records, and by undertaking a survey.
A detailed review normally requires the input and assistance of a number of individuals and therefore is best undertaken using a team. You will still need an overall co-ordinator or “champion” to ensure that the team produces the desired results. Team composition is very much dependent on the size and type of institution but could be based on representatives of those people identified in this Action Checklist box and Template 1.
