In late 2009, Engineers without Borders, a student engineering society in the University of Warwick, sought support from the university Estates Office for a 1kW wind turbine project in a relatively remote area of the main campus. The partnership thus formed started the project and the Society went through the planning, design, production, construction and commissioning stages.
Planning permission was granted in March 2010 and, in October 2010, the turbine was finally hoisted aloft and connected to provide renewable electricity to an isolated maintenance building. The project provided the students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in a real-life practical situation and to experience practical multi-disciplinary project management involved in such projects.
