Travel surveys revealed that not many students living within 4 miles neither cycled nor walked to the University of Leeds. A Sport Leeds survey showed that half the students were physically active less than thrice a week and the level of activity decreased with progress of study. Therefore, the University of Leeds took part in the UTravelActive project, which promotes health, well-being and sustainable living through encouraging and facilitating active travel for students and staff of three higher and further education institutions, and local communities.
The project creates awareness on benefits of cycling and walking, make cycling accessible and develop partnerships. It has resulted in pro-sustainability travel behaviour among over 2000 people, increased cycling and walking at the University by 40-50% and walking by 5%-7%, respectively, and put over 800 extra cyclists locally on hire bikes.
