At Imperial College London, IT related activities account for 17% of all carbon emissions, with Windows desktop PCs accounting for the highest proportion of ICT electricity consumption, namely 37% of all IT related power consumption. Although Windows Power Saving was adopted as a College policy in 2006, it did not deliver the intended results.
As part of its commitment to provide sustainable IT, the College formulated a comprehensive Green IT Policy, which in turn resulted in ICT leading a number of sustainability initiatives across the institution as part of its “Step Change” campaign. The resulting annual CO2 saving is 4,400 tonnes, together with a monetary saving of £700K.
