Hundreds of fluorescent tubes are replaced on an annual basis by individual institutions.
Within the European Waste Catalogue, fluorescent tubes are classified as Hazardous waste (20 01 21) due to the presence of toxic components such as mercury and phosphorus.
In Scotland they are classified as Special Waste.
In the past some authorities used to accept small numbers of tubes for disposal to landfill. However, as the tubes have been classified as “absolute entries” there is no acceptable minimum for disposal to landfill and so they can only be landfilled at a site that is suitably licensed.
