At times of tightened budgets and ever increasing demand for IT services in universities and colleges, one area of cost that can and should be tackled is the cost of energy to run the IT. This is not always easy to do, as these costs are often hidden or subsumed into other costs centres. Typically, energy costs are seen as part of the overall facilities costs, and come under Estates, giving little incentive to the IT department to take steps to reduce the cost of energy, particularly if that requires capital investment with no costs to be recovered to pay it back.
