The 'Promoting Meaningful Teaching and Learning' Summit was one of four Summits at the EAUC-Scotland Conference 2017. This Summit was chaired by Betsy King from Learning for Sustainability Scotland, and consisted of five presentations and a workshop. You can find the resources from the different presentations linked below.

The Summit workshop asked attendees what practical actions they already take to address Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in their institution/subject area, as well as what more could be done to promote meaningful teaching and learning.

Thoughts and considerations included:

  • Education is important to encourage awareness of the impacts of individual and group decision-making
  • Practical implementation of ESD into a real life context is key to embedding it
  • Engagement with businesses and external partners is important for students, and to extend the audience and impact beyond the institution
  • Audience-appropriate engagement methods are important
  • Use both carrot and stick methods for embedding ESD
  • Use both bottom up and top down approaches to help encourage a virtuous cycle
