As part of its drive to become a leader in sustainable development, the University of St Andrews put in place a far-reaching Sustainable Development Strategy, encompassing environmental, social, business, financial and legal dimensions. Fundamental to this strategy’s subsequent success were management systems for monitoring, measuring and reporting on sustainability performance and the senior management’s positive response, support and leadership. The university’s sustainability reporting was based on the Global Reporting Index and DEFRA indicators.
This strategy was instrumental in securing for the university the Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) award for Outstanding Contribution to Sustainable Development in 2006.
