Ask your existing waste contractors to provide detailed reports on the waste that has been collected from your institution over the last year, or a longer period if possible.
Initially, contractors may not be keen to provide this information, but if they want to encourage you to continue using their service, it is in their interest to provide it. Most are now providing this type of information for their customers.
It is important to confirm the amount of waste you are producing. Contractors can very easily overestimate the tonnage of waste if they are converting from volumes to tonnes and not actually weighing the waste. It is very common for contractors to uplift containers that are less than full – sometimes only about a third full. Such a situation can result in overcharging for waste disposal and indicates inefficiencies in the waste management practices. For example, are bins uplifted on a set day? If so, are they always full or are you being charged for the collection and disposal of air?
