In educational institutions, large volumes of exams scripts and other confidential waste are disposed of each year, either to incinerators or to landfill. As a result of the Data Protection Act 1998, which came into force in March 2000, an increasing amount of paper with personal information has to be disposed of via the confidential route. You should check the policies drawn up by your institution under this legislation, to ensure that disposal of confidential waste is complying with regulations.
