BU has set a target of achieving net zero Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 2030/31.

Our new Climate and Ecological Crisis Action Plan sets out the plans to reduce emissions, as well as encouraging staff and students to become more sustainable in their everyday lives.

This is BU's third carbon management plan since 2010, which have delivered GHG emission reductions of 53 per cent between 2005/6 and 2019/20.  This has been achieved by installing zero or low-carbon technologies, building a more efficient estate and engaging staff and students to adopt more sustainable lifestyles, as well as the decarbonisation of the national electricity grid.  Of course, the pandemic has also played its part in this reduction.

The CECAP is a very different plan compared to the previous versions, as it focuses on embedding the response to the crisis throughout the institution's policy frameworks and in the education offer and research.  It includes the urgent need for action by staff and students to help stem the destruction of the natural world.

The Plan also sets out the science based initiative route to net zero through continued efforts to decarbonise all activities and implement adaptation measures to prepare the business for the expected climatic shocks.
